Swedish/Dutch Monark Post Carrier (flakmoped)

Inlägg av Marc & Judy »

<div class=KonaBody><!-- <EdIndex> -->Hej. Moppefans.

We are Marc & Judy from The Netherlands.

Both Judy and me have a Monark Post Carrier from the 60's, Judy bought hers about 15 years ago from a postman in our home town...

We have used this carrier extensively and it was allways parked outside...
we had to renovate it a couple of times, not very well, but just enough to keep it riding.
It was originally red, then became blue and now it is black. (see picture)
We allways liked this carrier very much, and it took us about 13 years to
find an other one...
Finally we found one in Holland again, on a site like Blocket, it was original, all in small pieces and incomplete... rusted, but not too bad.......
At first we were in doubt if we would keep this carrier in its original state, or if it had to be restored.
But after revising the motor, we decided to go on with the restauration.

More than a year we searched for spare parts and information in The Netherlands, but we could not find spare parts, and only a little information......
A man who used to work at Volvo's tipped us to search in Sweden, and this is how we found Tradera and Blocket.
We were pleasently surprised to find so many flakmopeds and spare parts left in Sweden..

We also noticed a few changes in the name and model... Monark became
MCB, the backwheel size became smaller.
But we couldn't find any pictures of our Dutch model in Sweden..??
Most of the Swedish people who know anything about flakmopeds, did not recognize our frame model....
In our search for information and spare parts, we stumbeled upon a
"flakcykel".? which the Dutch postmen used, even back in the 30's, it had the same flak as our flakmopeds..!!
This brought us to the conclusion, the frame had to be custom made to fit this flak...

So, with almost all the missing parts complete, we could start restoring...
We learned from the info model 1731 was equipped with a parkeringsbroms, but both our carriers did not have this, it probably was broken and removed after all these years...it was a bit of a puzzle to find out how it worked..!

We have been restoring for 2 years now, and the end is in sight....
We try to get it finished before 14 sept. there is an oldtimer evenemang in our home town , and a week later a big evenamang in a town nearby.

Our search and restauration has been, and still is, quit an ordeal...
We have learned so much and we have made contact with many nice and helpfull Swedish people.

It seems we now have become sort of specialists of Monark carriers here in The Netherlands...
It is a pity there are not many of these beautifull carrriers left in our country, but we will keep searching for info, and try to find other existing carriers...
We have found 3 other Dutch Post Carriers so far, and pictures of 2 carriers of the Swedish models, one in Holland and one in France, but also with small changes, mainly the Framskärm, this we have not yet seen on a flakmoped in Sweden...

We have heard that Holland and Sweden are the two country's with the most veteranmopeder...
Judging by the many moped sites and forums in both our country's, this might just be true...

We placed here some photo's from the restauration, showing the carrier as we bought it.. and a few photo's of the carrier restaurated..

Most of the info we collected, photo's and the progress of our restauration can be viewed on our site:

Many thanks to all who have made our restauration become possible....

Marc & Judy.

<div class=KonaBody><!-- <EdIndex> -->Very nice work indeed!!! :P

I have never seen a "flakmoped" with an jlo engine before. Flakmopeds are very common on the islands outside Gothenburg used by the fishermans to transport all kind of things. On many of the islands cars wasn't allowed back in the days so that's why it was a common sight and it still is actually!!! <!-- </EdIndex> --></div>
